When Unexpected Death Happens

Monday, July 21, 2025 in Costa Rica actor, musician, and spoken word poet Malcolm-Jamal Warner died due to drowning. He was pulled down by an under current. Malcom was known by most Gen Xers as the actor who played the son Theo Huxtable on “The Cosby Show”. He was 54 years old but I still considered him as my younger brother. Reading through social media post a lot people also considered him as their little brother.

The day following his death I learned or maybe rediscovered that he was a spoken word poet. In addition he was into writing and performing music with his band. But what I didn’t know was a friend and fellow board member of The Watering Hole Poetry Group personally knew Malcolm; and even shared a stage with him. It makes his death sting even a little bit more. We never know what life may lead us to or to whom it may lead us. There are some people who excude a certain light and I believe Malcolm-Jamal Warner was one of them. And from the many accolades from fellow actors and poets he was a legit average and nice guy.

The world we live in is finite. Tomorrow or even tonight is not promised. I try to remind myself of this fact when I get distracted. There are things that God and the universe have put in my spirit. And I know I need to follow through on them. One of the main things is launching a podcast on YouTube. I’m doing it without having the perfect equipment or setup. Organizing my home is another goal in order to move. Next year is a milestone birthday and dare I say closer to being a senior citizen. Even at my full adult age I’m still figuring out this thing called life.

Overall I’m blessed even as I navigate what sometimes I think is a messy and chaotic life. What Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s death did was remind me to live fully. So, I’ll keep pushing forward until there is no more push to give. Finally, condolences to those who really did know Malcolm.
